Report: Mercedes To End The C63 With 4-Cylinder And Replace With An Inline-6 C53

After a lengthy two years, Mercedes is finally putting an end to the disappointing saga of the AMG C63 S E-Performance. The company will be dropping this unpopular sports model from its lineup as part of the upcoming redesign of the C-Class.
The new AMG C53 4Matic+ with a straight-six engine will initially be a replacement, reports the well-informed portal MBPassion.de. The AMG C 43 is also likely to fall victim to the change in strategy.
When AMG introduced its new C63 in September 2022, the outcry was huge, and not just among fans of the iconic mid-size model. The company based in Affalterbach replaced the beloved V8 with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The fact that it achieves a system output of 680 hp and 1,020 Nm with a plug-in hybrid drive, electric turbocharger, and other technical innovations was completely irrelevant to fans and customers until today.
C53 AMG To Get An Inline-6 Turbo Hybrid
Although experts confirmed the car’s outstanding characteristics in many tests, the four-cylinder C63 did not sell at all. Mercedes does not publish sales figures for individual models, but we do not need them to understand that the model has suffered an absolute market fiasco.
A recent report suggests that Mercedes officials have recognized the urgency of the situation and are taking action. The GLC63, alongside the C63, may be discontinued. However, instead of the V8 engine fans desire, the GLC63 will use a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder mild hybrid from the AMG CLE53, producing 449 hp and 560 Nm, along with a starter generator offering an additional 23 hp and 205 Nm.
According to the report, the current C43 with a four-cylinder mild hybrid (408+14 hp) is also being removed from the range. It seems that AMG’s experiment with four-cylinder engines in the mid-range segment has failed miserably.
Despite their efforts to defend the C63 and deny rumors of discontinuation, Mercedes-Benz is facing pressure as customers increasingly choose the BMW M3 over the new four-cylinder model. While the upcoming six-cylinder engine may improve performance, it cannot replicate the iconic sound and feel of the 4.0-liter V8.
