Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Now Gets A New 48V Mild Hybrid Diesel

Toyota is revolutionizing the Land Cruiser Prado by integrating a powerful 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a significantly smoother and more comfortable driving experience both on and off the road.

The new Land Cruiser Prado 48V features the same electrified diesel powertrain as the mild hybrid Hilux introduced earlier this year, combining a 2.8-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor-generator and a 48V battery, all paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota says the system takes up less space than the full-hybrid arrangement used in the Yaris, Corolla, C-HR and Prius, meaning neither the Land Cruiser Prado’s body nor powertrain required significant modifications.

“The system in no way compromises the Land Cruiser Prado’s ability to operate in extreme conditions and on difficult terrain,” says Toyota, noting that the high-mounted and waterproof motor-generator means it can still wade through water up to 700mm deep.

The motor, which contributes 16PS and 65Nm, recuperates energy during deceleration to charge the 48V battery. The results, Toyota claims, are smoother acceleration and improved efficiency, along with enhanced off-road capability.
