Mercedes Achieved Fantastic Sales With Its Iconic G-Wagon SUV
While Mercedes-Benz experienced a nine percent decline in overall sales in 2025, its iconic G-Class achieved a historic result. Sales of the legendary SUV increased by an impressive 23 percent, with a total of 49,700 vehicles delivered, representing the highest number of units sold in a single year since the model was first introduced in 1979.
According to Mercedes, the electric version of the G580 with EQ technology contributed significantly to this record result, attracting new customers to the segment. The claim contrasts with an earlier report by German business magazine Handelsblatt, which last year quoted a company executive as allegedly describing the electric G-Class as a “complete flop” that “stands like lead with dealers.”
Mercedes intends to further expand the G-Class line in the coming period. The return of the convertible version has already been confirmed, and other variants have been announced without revealing specific details. It should be noted that the smaller G-Class, whose presentation is expected in 2027, will be a separate model with its own platform and possibly separate sales statistics. This more compact model should be available with classic internal combustion engines as well as an electric version.
It is not yet known whether the current generation will get more extravagant versions like the Landaulet model or the AMG version with six wheels. Given Mercedes’ commitment to V12 engines, the return of that powertrain also remains a possibility.
In 2025, Mercedes also celebrated the production of the 600,000th example of the G-Class, 46 years after the vehicle’s production began. It is a fascinating fact that approximately 80 percent of all G-class vehicles ever produced are still in active use today. The production of this iconic SUV is not carried out directly by Mercedes but by Magna Steyr in its production facility in Graz, Austria.
