Volkswagen’s Profit Falls By 53% With Porsche As The Major Culprit
“In 2025, we kept our company firmly on course despite strong headwinds.” If that’s the biggest achievement, then we know it: the Volkswagen Group incurred significant losses in 2025.
The Volkswagen Group—not just the brand itself—posted an operating profit of €8.9 billion in 2025. While there are certainly years when we don’t earn that much, for Volkswagen, this figure represents a significant setback. Compared to 2024, profits fell by a whopping 53 percent, while revenue remained more or less unchanged at €322 billion. Volkswagen cites US import tariffs as the main causes of this setback, as well as the “costs associated with adjusting Porsche’s product strategy.” This adjustment, which involved the decision to reintroduce combustion engine versions of several models, is indeed costly.
In total, the Volkswagen Group sold 9 million vehicles in 2025, roughly at the 2024 level. Sales in Europe and South America were significantly higher, but sales in North America and China fell sharply.
So adjustments are needed at Volkswagen, whether it concerns products or sales markets. This process is already underway, and Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume (pictured) is therefore cautiously optimistic about the future. 2026 will definitely be an important year for Volkswagen in Europe, as the company will launch a whole range of compact EVs (ID Polo, Raval, Epiq) this year, with significant expectations.
