Lamborghini CEO Stefan Winkelmann said today that the company’s decision to abandon the development of fully electric vehicles (BEVs) was the right one.

Winkelmann told CNBC that Lamborghini made a good decision when it dropped the all-electric Lanzador and the electric version of the Urus SUV to focus on plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

He added that innovation should not be forced on customers and that Lamborghini judged that their clientele’s interest in fully electric cars was not growing fast enough.

His comments come after harsh criticism and negative investor reaction to Ferrari’s first all-electric Luce car, unveiled this week in Italy.

Ferrari shares fell around eight percent in Milan and more than five percent in New York after the unveiling of the new vehicle.

Analysts estimate that the negative reaction is partly caused by the design of the car itself, which represents a big change compared to the traditional look of Ferrari vehicles.

The Luce model was designed by a former design director of Apple, and the car attracted attention with a minimalist interior with screens and an unusual exterior.

Former director of the company Luca di Montezemolo, as well as the Italian Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini, made negative comments about Ferrari’s electric model.
