Bugatti Chiron Prototype 4-005 Retires After 8 Years, 46,000 Miles
One of eight early testers, the Bugatti Chiron prototype 4-005, is finally being retired after 8 long years.
The ‘four’ in 4-005 stands for prototype while the ‘five’ stands for the fifth prototype of the Chiron.
All of Chiron’s software was developed and tested in 4-005, including HVAC controls and instrument cluster displays.
Before the Bugatti Chiron went on sale in 2016 as one of the world’s fastest production cars, there were eight prototypes. Now one of these early testers, the prototype 4-005, is finally being retired.
During its service years, the Bugatti Chiron prototype 4-005, made in 2013, was able to park more than 74,000 km (~46,000 miles) on the odometer.
All of the Chiron’s software was developed and tested in 4-005, including the HVAC controls, instrument cluster displays, and other features currently in the production car.
The ‘4’ in the Bugatti Chiron prototype 4-005 stands for prototype while the ‘5’ stands for the fifth prototype of the Chiron.

In all, 13 engineers, computer scientists and physicists worked with the ‘Four Five’, traveling the world with the team during the testing phases that included trips to South Africa, snow drifts in Scandinavia and fast laps of Nardo ring.
A Member of the team, Rudiger Warda, who worked with 4-005, said :
“In the case of the 4-005, we performed all the tests and were on the road for many weeks, and this brings you together. The prototype shaped our work and with the prototype we shaped the Chiron”
Norbert Uffmann, the man behind the telemetry and connectivity at Bugatti, added that :
“In spite of it being an immense feat, we drove for up to ten hours at a time – and got out of the car feeling fit in the evenings”
