Chameleon Car : Color Changing BMW iX Flow Named To TIME’s List Of Best Inventions 2022
Color changing BMW iX Flow concept vehicle named to TIME’s annual list of Best Inventions for 2022.
Chameleonic BMW iX Flow is a unique vehicle capable of changing its entire body color at the touch of a button.
First revealed at Consumer Electronics Show 2022, the body of BMW iX Flow is wrapped in color-changing “E Ink”.
When the “E Ink” is stimulated by electrical signals controlled by a phone app, it brings different pigments to the surface.
The BMW iX Flow, the world’s first color-changing vehicle, has been named to TIME’s annual list of Best Inventions for 2022, joining this year’s annual list of 200 extraordinary innovations.
The chameleonic BMW iX Flow, which was recognized in the Automotive category, is a unique vehicle that is capable of changing its entire body color at the touch of a button.
Of the new list, TIME’s editors write :
“The result is a list of 200 groundbreaking inventions (and 50 special mention inventions) including life-mapping artificial intelligence, diamonds made from excess carbon in the air, and the most powerful telescope ever that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.
The BMW iX Flow prototype was first revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 in Las Vegas in January. Its body is wrapped in color-changing “E Ink” created in collaboration with a Taiwanese company of the same name.
When the “E Ink” (electronic ink technology) wrap is stimulated by electrical signals controlled by a phone app, the material brings different pigments to the surface.
“This is really energy efficient colour change using the technology E Ink,” said BMW research engineer Stella Clarke.
“So we took this material – it’s kind of a thick paper – and our challenge was to get this on a 3D object like our cars.”
For now, the wrap on the iX Flow could only can change from white to black, with shades of gray in between, but BMW said that the technology will be expanded to include colors like blue and red.
