Lamborghini Delays Its First Electric Model By A Year

Several automakers have changed their electrification plans over the past year. Slowing growth is forcing companies like Volvo, Bentley, Ford, and others to rethink their strategies and change launch schedules, including Lamborghini.

Lamborghini now plans to delay the launch of its first electric model by a year, its chief executive said. The company’s boss, Stefan Winkelmann told reporters that its EV will arrive in 2029 instead of 2028, according to Reuters.

Winkelmann said he doesn’t believe 2029 is too late to launch an EV, adding that the company doesn’t think the segment will be EV-ready until 2026.

Also pending are potential changes to the European Union’s internal combustion engine ban set for 2035. Lamborghini has also expressed interest in the potential for synthetic fuels to keep internal combustion engines in new vehicles.

“We think this is the right way to face the future,” Winkelmann said. “There are discussions around synthetic fuels, and this is an opportunity for our kind of car.”

Their first electric car won’t be a supercar. Instead, it will be the four-seat Grand Tourer that the Lanzador concept announced last year.

Winkelman also said earlier this year that electric supercars are not selling well and may never truly attract consumers.
