The Manual Transmission Could Make A Comeback In Ferrari’s Lineup
Ferrari could bring back the manual transmission after a hiatus of more than a decade. The manual transmission will appear in exclusive, limited-edition models.
It would be the first time a Ferrari model has had such a transmission since 2012. The last model to have a manual transmission was the California (pictured). Since then, all Ferrari models, both production and limited editions, have only had automatic transmissions.
Ferrari’s head of product development, Gianmaria Fulgenzi, hinted that Ferrari could bring back a manual transmission due to the brand’s short-term push to the limits of performance with its cars. Most likely, the manual transmission could return in a future model in the Icona series.
Fulgenzi said there is a strong demand from customers interested in the return of the manual transmission. If Ferrari does bring back the manual transmission, the models equipped with it will have engines with less torque to make life easier for the driver behind the wheel.
“We will soon reach the performance limit with our cars,” Fulgenzi said.
“In Formula 1, it takes 2.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. With the SF90 XX, we’re somewhere around 2.5 seconds or 2.4 seconds, and that’s with all-wheel drive. For an ordinary driver, such acceleration requires them to be physically stronger or to have stronger neck muscles. Don’t think that all our customers want to train every morning just to be able to drive our cars,” added the head of development of the Italian brand.
