VW Releases Range Topping R Version Of The Touareg
Performance SUVs are now becoming a norm with every manufacturer trying to cook something. It can be said that Volkswagen has now added a performance variant to its Touareg. The R is a performance trim level for VW and was 1st used in the Golf before spreading to other models. We will be looking at how the Touareg R will face off the competition.
Exterior Looks
The looks of the VW Touareg R are the same but it has taken some dark tones to the design. There are now dark color schemes on some parts of the SUV like in the side mirrors, the grille, and wheels. You can see the R logo on the grille indicating its a performance version. Aside from all those little details, every other design pattern is the same. To further differentiate the Touareg R from the rest, a 20 and 22 inches alloy wheels are fitted as standard.

Interior Layout
The interior is still the same but VW has added more features to the Touareg R. The regular Apple play and Android Auto are standard features and all the layout will be available in black trim. A big 12-inch screen sits in front of the driver, while a larger 15-inch touchscreen sits in the center console. VW has included its latest version of the brand’s Travel Assist adaptive cruise control system, which can steer, accelerate and brake the Touareg at speeds of up to 155mph. This is 15mph more than the standard version. This feature is also semi-autonomous in nature.
Engine And Transmission
Now, this is where the improvement is significant. For the first time in the VW Touareg, it will feature a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system. The displacement is a 3.0 V6 turbocharged engine that outputs 456hp. Now here is the catch, the engine has 2 motors with the petrol engine outputting 335hp while the electric motor will output 134hp combining them to 456hp in maximum output. An 8-speed automatic gearbox is standard and it will be offered in permanent four-wheel drive in both combustion and electric driving modes. The VW Touareg R will cover the 0-62mph sprint in around 5 seconds.
The Touareg R is able to drive at up to 87mph in fully electric mode, while a 14.1kWh battery stored between the back seats and the boot allows for an estimated all-electric range of 27 miles.
