There are four categories of people who steal catalytic converters in Nigeria.

A catalytic converter is an emission control device in the exhaust system of most cars. The function of the catalytic converter aka indomie, is to convert harmful compounds from the exhaust into harmless or less harmful ones.

Catalytic converters are very important in cars and can cause problems when they are bad or absent. An overworked catalytic converter can cause fire in a car. A bad catalytic converter can also cause the check engine light to come on. It can also cause smelly exhaust fume.

However, the stealing of this catalytic converter is not a new trend in Nigeria; it has been going on as long as we can remember. Most times, these thieves are thirstier than a camel in the Sahara Desert in July. They are always ready to make away with the catalytic converter in your car.

One of the plausible reasons why thieves target this catalytic converter constantly is because of the mix of precious metals used for making it.  One of these precious metals is the palladium; which is now costlier than gold.

Another thing of worry is that this deplorable trend has made it into Nigerian ports, and not just mechanic workshop and streets.

1. Mechanics

Some unfortunate mechanics are very good in tampering with cars in their workshop for repairs. They can go extra length in making away with the catalytic converter of your car. They often time achieve this when a car is left in their workshop for more than a day.  If your car needs to spend more than a day at the workshop, ensure that your catalytic converter is there before you leave. This will make detecting the absence easier.

Let’s share this story with you. A man bought a brand new car from Elizade and asked the mechanic to deliver the car for him at home, only for the mechanic to remove the catalytic converter before delivery. The matter was taken up and it was later traced to the mechanic.

This is a clear example of how far some mechanics can go.

2. Panel beaters/welders

One annoying thing about these folks is that most of them don’t know the value of the catalytic converter; they would rather sell it for peanuts. When next you take your car to a panel beater/welder to work on your car, especially your exhaust system, ensure they don’t tamper with the converter of your car. Always examine your car to see if there are welding on the catalytic converter housing.

3. Car dealers

There are many car dealers selling cars on daily basis in Nigeria. These dealers are good in tampering with the catalytic converters of cars before selling it to an unsuspecting client.

4. Port workers

It not a new thing that some bad eggs working in our port make away with vital car parts like the catalytic converter. These thieves at in ports are ever ready to devour a car being shipped into the country.
