US fighter jets intercept Russian nuclear-capable bombers and fighter jets off Alaskan Coast.
For the second time in two days, two formations of Russian nuclear-capable bombers were intercepted by US NORAD F-22 Fighter Jets near Alaska.
The first Russian formation consisted of two Tu-95 bombers, and they came within 20 nautical miles of Alaskan shores on Monday.
They were accompanied by two Su-35 fighter jets and an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft.
The second Russian formation consisted of two Tu-95 bombers, and supported by an A-50. They came within 32 nautical miles of Alaskan shores on Tuesday.
Both formations were met by US NORAD F-22 Raptors. They were supported by KC-135 Stratotankers and an E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System.

NORAD said in a statement that
“Specifically, two Russian bombers entered the ADIZ and were intercepted by two F-22s; while an E-3 provided overall command and control,”
“The bombers exited and then re-entered the Alaskan ADIZ accompanied by two Su-35 fighter jets.
NORAD committed an additional two F-22s and E-3 to relieve the initial intercept aircraft.”

According to NORAD, the Russian military aircrafts remained in international airspace after the incidents. It added that at no time did they enter United States sovereign airspace.
NORAD Commander, General Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, said :
“Intercepting multiple Russian aircraft demonstrates NORAD forces’ readiness and capability to defend the homelands 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,”

“Flying air patrols protects the approaches to our nations and sends a clear message we continue executing our homeland defense missions with the same capability and capacity we always bring to the fight.”
The Russian bomber flights are seen by US military officials as part of Moscow’s effort to train its military for a potential crisis. It’s also a way of sending a message of strength to adversaries.
