BMW’s Only Minivan, The 2-Series Active Tourer Gets Renewed For 2022

The second-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been revealed with a bold new look, an overhauled powertrain line-up and a raft of enhanced technology.

Set to be released in Europe next February, the MPV adopts a bold new design that, like many other BMWs these days, is bound to cause some controversy. Yes, the minivan features the not so famous large kidney grille. LED headlights are standard but adaptive headlights with a matrix function that leaves the high beam permanently on is an option. The size is very similar to the outgoing model but it’s sleeker and more modern looking than before.

The interior has been completely redesigned to accommodate BMW’s iDrive 8 operating system, now with a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. The elongated centre armrest includes the start/stop and hazard buttons, along with the tiny automatic gear lever, electronic parking brake, and a rotary knob to control audio volume. The “floating” console has freed up space underneath, which can be used for storage.

From launch, the new 2 Series Active Tourer will offer 168bhp 1.5-litre 3-cylinder (218i) and 215bhp 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engines (223), both fitted with 48V mild-hybrid technology, plus a 2.0-litre diesel (218d), all paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. BMW will also launch 2 more powerful engine variants in the 225e and 230e plug-in hybrids. These will come standard with all-wheel drive and offer outputs of 241 hp and 321 hp, respectively. They will also feature a 16.3-kilowatt-hour battery capable of delivering a pure electric range of more than 30 miles.

As a minivan, the 2-series Active Tourer is very practical as the rear seats can slide up to 5.1 inches. Furthermore, boot capacity increases by as much as 90 litres and there’s up to 470 litres of room behind the rear seats.
