Lagos Begins Clearing Of Water Hyacinth On Waterways

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has begun clearing and removing water hyacinth from the state’s jetties and terminals.
Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, the General Manager of LASWA, stated this in a statement released on Friday in Lagos.
According to Emmanuel, pegging and removal of the water hyacinth had begun in locations where the infestation was severe and had a negative impact on navigation.
LASWA, together with other State MDAs and Federal Agencies, were working together on the project and had mobilized enough people and machinery to begin removing the tough weed.
The initial part of the project, according to the General Manager, was pegging down the water hyacinth to prevent its spread and infestation across ferry channels.

Following that, the aquatic weed would be properly cleared utilizing both physical labor and weed harvesting machinery.
He said that the initiative will reduce the risk of boat engines being damaged by the floating aquatic vegetation and remove travel time delays.
It would also promote water transportation as a viable, safe, quick, and secure mode of transportation.
Emmanuel reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to enhancing the state’s inland waterways’ safety standards and procedures.
He instructed commanders of boats to always drive while abiding by appropriate caution, while enlisting the full participation of all parties involved.
