Archbishop of Canterbury, Who Crowned King Charles, Fined £510 For Speeding In His VW Golf

Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who crowned King Charles III, is fined £510 for speeding in his VW Golf.
The 67-year-old was recorded driving at 25mph in a 20mph zone in his Volkswagen Golf last year.
He admitted the offence in writing and was ordered to pay a fine of £300, a £120 victim surcharge and £90 in costs.
Conviction came days after Welby led the King’s coronation ceremony and the same day he criticised UK government.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has been handed three penalty points and forced to pay a fine of £510, just days after just days after crowning King Charles III in a historic ceremony.
Welby was caught in his Volkswagen Golf doing 25mph in a 20mph zone in central London on 2 October last year. He was sentenced at a private magistrates’ court hearing on Wednesday.
The 67-year-old admitted the offence in writing and was ordered to pay a fine of £300, a £120 victim surcharge and £90 in costs, a court spokesperson said.
The conviction came same day he criticised the government’s plans to combat the issue of migrants crossing the Channel on small boats as “morally unacceptable and politically impractical”.
DAILY MAIL said Welby was prosecuted through the single justice procedure, which allows the courts to deal with cases without the defendant having to go to a hearing.
A Lambeth Palace spokeswoman said the archbishop was aware of the speeding offence but had not been notified that it had gone to court.
“Yes, the archbishop knows about it but hadn’t been notified that it had gone to court. He has tried to resolve this and pay the fine three times.
“He has all the paperwork to prove that he has tried to pay. Admin errors seem to be causing problems.”
