GM Remains Committed Fully To Electric Trucks

The GMC Hummer EV began production in late 2021. It marked General Motors’ debut with the new Ultium battery platform, representing a significant move toward its goal of exclusively selling electric vehicles by 2035. This platform would later support models like the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Cadillac Escalade IQ, but much has evolved since that initial launch.
A recent report claims that the carmaker has suspended the development of its next-generation electric truck program, raising doubts about the future of those vehicles. According to three people who spoke to Crain’s Detroit Business, GM recently notified suppliers of an indefinite delay without offering an estimated time of return.
But GM has since denied these reports. In a statement to Motor1, a company spokesperson said:
‘GM has not canceled any electric trucks. EVs remain the end game for GM and we are firmly committed to our award-winning electric truck and SUV portfolio, along with our advanced technology roadmap. There is no impact to production and availability of the current battery electric trucks.’
GM’s EV Sales Slump
After the federal government terminated the tax credit, GM, like other automakers, saw a decline in EV sales. Sales of the electric Silverado, Escalade, and Hummer decreased by 41.0%, 26.8%, and 52.2%, respectively, through the first quarter.
GMC Sierra EV sales increased, but by just 3.1 percent. The brand sold 1,288 trucks in the first three months of the year compared to 1,249 in 2025, which is a drop in the bucket for an automaker that sold 626,429 in the first quarter.
