Why New Cars Are Getting Less Reliable: Drivers’ Growing Dissatisfaction

Rapid innovation in the auto industry, fueled by intense global competition, is accelerating the release of new models. However, this shortened development cycle, driven largely by Chinese manufacturers, is raising concerns that the resulting complexity and lack of rigorous testing are compromising vehicle reliability.

Chinese manufacturers are setting the pace

Many analysts believe that it is Chinese manufacturers who have further accelerated the development of cars. Having conquered the domestic market, they now want to be competitive in Europe, so they are developing new models much faster than before. In China, it takes about two years to develop a new model, half the time it takes in Europe.

To stay competitive, European, Japanese, and Korean manufacturers are forced to keep up with the pace. However, shorter deadlines mean less time for development, testing, and fixing potential defects before the car reaches customers.

Software is becoming the biggest source of problems

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of recalls of new cars due to various manufacturing defects. While once the biggest problems were mechanical in nature, today electronic systems and software are increasingly causing difficulties.

Modern cars have dozens of computers that control the engine, safety systems, multimedia, and numerous driver assistance functions. Therefore, even the smallest software error can lead to the recall of thousands of vehicles worldwide.

Longer life cycle could increase reliability

Some manufacturers have decided to extend the lifespan of their models rather than quickly replacing them with new generations. Examples include models like the Seat Ibiza, Hyundai i30 or Toyota Corolla, which remain on the market longer than was previously the case.

This approach gives manufacturers more time to perfect cars and fix any potential flaws. At the same time, production costs are reduced because the same components are used for many years, which can also result in greater reliability.

Will cars become more reliable again?

Although slower development would probably result in better quality products, that is unlikely to happen anytime soon. The market is demanding faster introductions of new models from manufacturers, and competition has never been greater.

This does not mean that all new cars are unreliable, but the fact is that today’s vehicles are technically much more complex than they were ten or fifteen years ago. More electronics, more software, and shorter development cycles increase the likelihood of problems, which is why reliability will remain one of the biggest challenges for the automotive industry in the coming years.
