Ford Files A Trademark For The “Ranger Crosspower”

Published

on

Ford has filed trademarks for “Ranger Crosspower” in New Zealand and Australia, sparking speculation about a potential new powertrain, hybrid option, or high-performance trim for the midsize pickup. Ford has yet to confirm plans for the name, which could also apply to other models.

While trademark filings don’t guarantee a product launch, they often precede new releases, as seen with the 2018 Maverick trademark before its 2021 launch. Ford has never used the “Crosspower” name, which bears no relation to the historical “Crossflow” engine.

Ford’s “Ranger Crosspower” trademark filing suggests a potential new powertrain, possibly a hybrid configuration, for the next-gen Ranger. Given the “power” branding, it may also indicate a high-performance trim sitting below the Raptor. As the trademark is independent of specific vehicle lines, it could eventually be applied across multiple Ford models that share common engine architectures like the Explorer and Bronco.

A Ranger-based SUV is unlikely since the Bronco shares the Ranger’s platform. Ford hasn’t confirmed if “Ranger Crosspower” refers to a new powertrain, trim, or just a protected name. Meanwhile, CEO Jim Farley is questioning if future Ranger development should remain in Australia or move to China or Vietnam due to costs.
