CNG-powered Buses Begins Operation In The Last Quarter Of 2024 – LAMATA

LAMATA to deploy Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for passenger operations in the last quarter of 2024.
Agency said its focus on alternative fuels for public transit buses reflects its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
In a move reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in Lagos State, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will be deployed for passenger operations in Lagos in the last quarter of this year.
The news is coming against the backdrop of plan by LAMATA to introduce the use of biogas as alternative fuel for the running of public transit buses to cut emission as part of effort by the Lagos State Government to achieve net zero emission by 2050.
To produce an implementation framework for the use of alternative fuels, LAMATA today held a stakeholder engagement programme, where the final report of the assessment and feasibility study of alternative fuels for public transportation was
presented.
The event hosted the top echelon of administrators in the environment, transportation and energy sectors, including LAMATA’s Managing Director Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo and Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, Vice President Oando Clean Energy Limited.
The study, conducted by CPCS Transcom Limited in collaboration with Nexant Consulting and funded by Swede Fund, thoroughly examined various alternative fuel options and narrowed the decision down to biogas, which will be the source of usable biomethane.
“The study identified various feedstock sources to fuel the biogas plant, including sewage from treatment facilities, organic waste from households and markets, slaughterhouse waste, and animal manure,” LAMATA said in a statement.
“It also mapped out the key stages of the project : feedstock acquisition, transportation, storage and processing, production, and
integration with the public bus system.
At the stakeholder meeting engagement, Mrs. Akinajo reaffirms LAMATA’s dedication to
collaboration in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Lagos State, which she said aligns with the state’s climate action plan.
