FG reopens the third mainland bridge, 48- after it was closed to vehicular traffic and 24-hrs ahead of schedule.

The FG on Monday, December 28th reopened the Third mainland bridge barely 48-hrs after the 11. 8km long bridge was closed to vehicular traffic for renovation.

This was revealed by the Federal Controller of Works Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, in a statement sent to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Popoola said that the total shutdown had to be lifted 24 hours ahead of schedule because the contractor was able to fast-track the delicate task they needed to execute.

“We have completed the casting of the three number expansion joints on Third Mainland bridge.

Therefore, the bridge shall be opened at 12:00 midnight Sunday 27th December, and no longer Monday 28th December. That is 48 hours and no more 72 hours,”

Recall that Olukayode made a disclosure in a media chat on Tuesday, December 22. 2020, that there would be a 72-hour total shutdown of the Third Mainland Bridge.

The complete shutdown of the Third Mainland bridge was inevitable in order to carry out some rehabilitation works that is aimed to stop vibrations caused by the movement of vehicles.

During the two-day shutdown, traffic was partially diverted on a stretch of 3. 5km where construction is ongoing between Adeniji Adeniji Ramp and Ebute Meta.
