Tesla Model X That Will Be Used To Transport Astronauts

Astronauts travelling for the first SpaceX crewed mission will arrive at the launchpad in a Tesla. The launchpad for the upcoming space mission is at the International Space Station. This mission will be SpaceX first crewed mission.

SpaceX or Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company. It has it’s headquartered in Hawthorne, California. It was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk. The goal of SpaceX is to reduce the cost of transportation to space.

Model X was recently announced as the new official vehicle to transport NASA astronauts for the SpaceX mission. For decades, NASA had previously used the shiny Astro van.

SpaceX recently conducted a series of tests to prepare for the first official launch of its ‘Crew Dragon’ spacecraft. One such preparation is how to bring astronauts to the International Space Station. As part of the process, there has to be an official vehicle bringing the astronauts to the launchpad.

Boeing, which is the other provider contracted by NASA to bring astronauts to the space station, is planning to use a similar vehicle to bring the astronauts to the launch pad.

Now SpaceX has confirmed that they will use the Model X as the official vehicle to transport astronauts for the first crew missions.

Elon Musk, who also runs the electric car company, used Teslas to get around Kennedy Space Center for Sunday’s launch escape test. No one was aboard for the test flight, just two mannequins.

But during a launch dress rehearsal Friday, the two NASA astronauts assigned to the first SpaceX crew got a lift to the pad in a Tesla Model X.

On May 27, 2020, SpaceX and NASA will make history when the first astronauts launch from U.S. soil in nearly a decade.

The project is intended to bring back the ability to send astronauts in space in the US in years.

Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken are going to be the first astronauts to travel in SpaceX’s Crew Dragon astronaut taxi and they will get there in a Tesla Model X.
