Honda Showcase An Autonomous Work Vehicle That Hauls And Operates By Itself
Autonomous vehicles have come a long way since their debut in the 1980s. Being featured in a number of industries at various positions, they’ve become pretty common in our daily lives nowadays.
Way back in CES 2018, Japanese automobile giant Honda had presented a variety of Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV) concepts and is now ready to make one of them a reality.
The fully electric AWV rides on the platform that underpins Honda’s side-by-side ATVs, and it uses a combination of radar and lidar sensors, GPS location positioning, and stereoscopic cameras to manoeuvre on its own, although it can be operated via remote control. The bed has a tailgate as well as folding bed walls on either side for easier loading, giving the AWV the overall appearance of a Kei pickup with the cab chopped off. The AWV is nine and a half feet long and almost five feet wide, weighing 1590 pounds without any cargo. It has a range of 27.9 miles when fully loaded, and will fully recharge in up to six hours with a 120-volt connection.
Honda says that it’s not ready to put the AWV into commercial production yet, but the company is continuing to develop the product. It’s looking for more partners like Black & Veatch that are interested in testing the machine. There’s a plan to add attachments and tools to the vehicle to make the machine even more helpful to human workers.
