The 2027 GMC Sierra And Chevy Silverado Could Get Bigger, More Powerful V8s
According to earlier reports, General Motors’ new Gen 6 small-block V8 engines, which are anticipated to be available in bigger displacements than the vehicles they will replace, may be installed in the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. This begs the issue of whether or not there will be a performance boost, and GM Authority could have an answer.
The magazine claims that the new Gen 6 5.7-liter V8 might generate 400 horsepower based on unverified rumoured power statistics. Compared to the existing 5.3-liter L84, that is roughly 45 horsepower more. In contrast, the more powerful Gen 6 6.6-liter V8 might produce about 475 horsepower, which would be 55 more than the current 6.2-liter L87.
The Story of the V8 Continues
The 2027 Silverado and Sierra would be even more suitable for workhorse roles if they had more power, at least in theory. The increased output may also improve the trucks’ responsiveness and driving pleasure for enthusiasts. However, additional displacement might lead to poorer fuel economy and make it harder to comply with pollution rules.
However, compared to the previous administration’s EV-focused strategy, the present regulatory environment seems more favourable towards combustion-powered vehicles, which could relieve some pressure on larger-displacement engines.
Prospective customers should prioritise dependability over performance, especially in light of the L87’s scrutiny due to engine failure worries connected to bearing-related problems. Class-action lawsuits have also been filed against the L87, but rumours indicate that GM is making production adjustments to guarantee that the new powertrains are more durable and of higher quality from the start.
Production Is Drawing Nearer
It remains to be seen if these rumoured power figures turn out to be true. The new Corvette Grand Sport, whose LS6 V8 engine is part of the same engine family and generates 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque, is proof that the Gen 6 small-block V8 family has already shown its performance potential. Compared to the departing LT2 V8, that is up to 40 horsepower more.
Not to get off topic, it has been suggested that the production of the upcoming Silverado and Sierra may start in October 2026. According to leaked design patents, they are also anticipated to have a boxier appearance—a strategy that has been more popular among full-size pickups, such as the Ford F-150.
