China’s Upcoming 2027 Regulations May Force Carmakers To Discontinue Fully Retractable Door Handles.
China’s proposed regulations effective January 1, 2027, will restrict fully electric retractable door handles, requiring manual override capabilities in the event of electrical failure.
Furthermore, the proposal establishes a July 1, 2027, deadline for the submission of documentation regarding models currently available for sale, while clarifying the criteria under which hidden-handle designs may necessitate a halt in production.
Effective January 1, 2027, manufacturers seeking to register new vehicle designs in China will be required to provide supplementary technical documentation and safety-validation data for any features classified by regulators as “innovative”, with fully flush, power-retracting door handles being a primary focus of these requirements.
China’s proposed 2027 regulations ban fully electric door handles, mandating manual overrides and specific dimensions for recessed designs. The rules also require physical controls for essential safety functions like lighting and wipers, limiting touchscreen-only interfaces.
Vehicles currently approved for the Chinese market are not exempt from these new regulatory requirements. Automakers are mandated to submit supplementary technical and validation documentation for all certified models by July 1, 2027, including vehicles such as the China-market BMW iX3, which does not feature pop-out handles. Additionally, a distinct safety standard regarding door handles provides these existing vehicles with an extended transition period to finalize any necessary hardware modifications.
Compliance requires more than just manual overrides. Regulators now demand documentation for 51 parameters, covering reliability, environmental performance, and sealing, plus 18,600 miles of durability testing for innovative designs.
These regulations don’t mean all cars with flush handles will be pulled from the market. Production halts and recalls apply only to models that miss the July 2027 documentation deadline and are later found to pose a safety risk. Automakers failing to meet these requirements must halt production and file a recall plan.
