Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded over 100 private and commercial vehicles operating illegal parking and garages on bridges across the State.
The enforcement operations was carried out following the expiration of a 7-day ‘Vacation Order’ issued (Monday, 16th of October, 2023) to motorists/commercial bus drivers to vacate all illegal parking/garages on top bridges.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Transportation Hon. Sola Giwa disclosed that the exercise, which would be continous, was aimed to totally remove every infractions impeding the free flow of traffic on bridges.
Giwa, who led the enforcement operations, confirmed that the over 100 private and commercial vehicles were impounded at Ejalonibu, Obalende, Apongbon Ebute-Ero, Idumota (Cater) bridges on Lagos Island.
He described it as nauseating, seeing those private/commercial bus drivers constitute public nuisance by operating illegal parking/garages on to bridges, thereby causing avoidable traffic gridlock and inconveniencing other motorists and road users.
According to Hon. Giwa :
“The enforcement operations would be a continuous exercise until zero tolerance on activities of these commercial bus drivers operating illegal parking/garages on top bridges is achieved in line with the ‘Theme+’ agenda of the present administration”
“We would continue to ensure free flow of traffic movement by scaling up our enforcement and clampdown operations on these stubborn private/commercial bus drivers”.
While maintaining that the activities of these recalcitrants commercial bus drivers is contrary to provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, he revealed that all the impounded vehicles would be charged immediately to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecutions.
