Wike Vs. El-Rufai: Lock-down Enforcement On The Streets
Governor Nyesom Wike
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has practically taken over command on the streets of Port Harcourt.
On Monday, May 4, The Governor ordered the lockdown in the state capital.
Since then, he has gone around the streets of Port Harcourt, delivering strict enforcement of the lock-down policy.
In the course of monitoring the level of compliance, Gov Wike has sent defaulters to forced quarantine and screening.
He has arrested violators and impounded their vehicles. He also insisted that the impounded vehicles would be auctioned.
Governor Wike also arrested some very important persons (VIPS). According to him, they were not on essential duties but were allegedly moving around with their police escorts.
The Governor also blasted the state Deputy Commissioner of Police for granting exemptions to companies. Says there can be no two governors.
In a statement, he said, “The defaulters will be tried by the mobile courts and I have told the Attorney General, all the impounded vehicles must be auctioned. By tomorrow, the Honourable Attorney General would have advertised those vehicles and we will auction them.
“Some people don’t believe that Coronavirus is in existence. Until you make them understand that we are serious, they will not believe it. We will auction the impounded vehicles.
After going around on inspection, the governor scored the state 95 per cent in compliance.
Nasir El-Rufai
Another Governor that has adopted this method of direct enforcement of lock-down is the Kaduna State Governor
Mallam Nasir El-Rufai placed a curfew in Kaduna State and restricted movement, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Yesterday, he went about the street of Kaduna to monitor the compliance level.

He also monitored the closed boundary between Kaduna and Kano States.
Just like his Rivers State counterpart, El-Rufai accused security agencies of complicity in the disregard for the enforcement of movement in the state.
He wondered why people still sneak into Kaduna from other states despite the presence of security operatives at the entre points.
He said that despite the closure of the border, unauthorised vehicles loaded with passengers have continued to have their way into the state.
According to El-Rufai, the sacrifices of the people are being jeopardized by the actions of some individuals who violate the Quarantine Orders, and the misconduct of some law enforcement officers that have facilitated this pattern of interstate travel.
On March 28 2020, El-Rufai tested positive for COVID-19. This happened after following contact with an index case. He was recently from the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital. This was after testing negative to the virus twice.
