Arsenal Star Mesut Ozil caught speeding at 97mph in Mercedes G-Wagon — tells court he thought the speedometer said km/h rather than mph.

The German professional footballer pleaded guilty to speeding and will be sentenced this month.

£350,000 (₦176 million) a week Arsenal star boasts one of the best car collection in the premier league.

His garage features cars like Mercedes-AMG G63; Mercedes-AMG S65; Mercedes SLS AMG; Ferrari 458; Porsche Panamera Turbo and Audis RS5.

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil this week told a magistrate court he thought the speedometer of his Mercedes G-Wagon was in km/h rather than miles after being caught speeding at 97mph while driving along the M1.

In a bid to escape a driving ban after being clocked coming back from training on July 2, Ozil blamed his German nationality as well as the ‘low engine noise’ of his G-Wagon for causing a lapse in concentration.

Ozil wrote to magistrates in Bromley, to insist :

“When attempting to rationalise my actions, I believe it was the combination of the empty road, with no other vehicles to gauge my vehicles speed against, and the misapprehension that I was travelling kmph rather than mph.”

“Due to the Covid-19 restrictions the motorway was effectively empty.

Ozil added :

“The only explanation that I can give is that due to the absence of other vehicles on the road, my concentration must have momentarily lapsed.

“The vehicle I was driving has very low engine noise and it is automatic transmission.

“I am a German national and I am obviously used to driving vehicles that would display speed in kilometres as compared to miles per hour.”

The German professional footballer, who rakes in £350,000 a week, pleaded guilty to speeding and will be sentenced this month.

While trying to appeal for a fine rather than a ban, the 2016 World Cup winner and former Real Madrid player, said :

“I do not suggest that this in any way excuses my driving on the day at all — I fully accept that the speed my vehicle was travelling is wholly unacceptable.”

Mesut Ozil will miss his Ferrari 458 he he gets ban for over-speeding.

“I travel to work on a daily basis by car and have personal commitments and a very young baby daughter (7 months old).

“In the current climate I would be very much against travelling on public transport with my baby daughter.

“My wife does not drive and therefore by necessity I will have to undertake the driving to any healthcare appointments for my daughter.”

The 32 year-old, who has not featured for Arsenal this season, boasts one of the best collection in premier league.

Ozil’s garage also features cars like Mercedes-AMG G63 SUV; Mercedes-AMG S65; Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG; Ferrari 458 Italia; Porsche Panamera Turbo and Audis RS5.
