Military helicopter crash kills 2 Army officers of the rank Major in eastern Kenya

The U.S.-made MD-530F gunship was on a training flight heading for Garissa in northeast Kenya.

The helicopter is one of six U.S.-made light attack helicopter gunships that Kenya Army acquired in January.

The crash comes a month after an helicopter ferrying police officers to a security meeting crashed in Kenya.

Two military officers were killed on Monday when the helicopter they were traveling in crashed in Machakos county, eastern Kenya.

According to Kenya Defense Forces, the U.S.-made MD-530F gunship was on a training flight before crashing at about 11 a.m. in Kanyonga village.

The statement added that the two, who were of the rank of Major, died on the spot. The cause of the crash was not immediately established.

The helicopter is one of six U.S.-made light attack helicopter gunships that the Kenya Army Aviation acquired in January.

The choppers were part of an initial order of 12 light attack and reconnaissance helicopters meant to enhance the firepower of the military in the wake of sustained attacks by al-Shabab militants.

The crash comes a month after an helicopter ferrying police officers to a security meeting crashed in Kenya.

Six police officers sustained injuries last month after the AgustaWestland AW119 helicopter they were traveling in crashed into a farm in Meru on Saturday morning
