FRSC Champions Tinubu’s Clean Mobility Agenda, Unveils Safety Framework For EVs And CNG Vehicles

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has pledged the agency’s full enforcement and regulatory backing for Nigeria’s shift toward Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) models, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The FRSC boss made this commitment on Thursday, 30 July 2026, while presenting a paper titled “The Safety of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicles on Nigerian Roads” at the 3rd Nigeria Auto Industry Summit (NAISU).

The summit, themed “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration,” was organized by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).

At the summit, the Corps Marshal stated that Tinubu’s bold reforms in the transportation and energy sectors have positioned Nigeria to embrace cleaner, safer and more cost-effective mobility, while accelerating economic growth and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

He noted that the FRSC has aligned its operations with the Federal Government’s clean energy transportation policy by reinforcing vehicle inspection protocols for CNG-powered and converted vehicles, improving emergency responses, tracking accidents through NACRIS, and running public enlightenment campaigns on new automotive technologies.

He also revealed the agency is actively collaborating with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and other strategic partners to develop a comprehensive framework for the safe deployment of Electric and CNG vehicles nationwide.

“The collaboration covers the operationalisation of the National Gas Vehicle Management System (NGVMS), development of Standard Operating Procedures, coordinated inspections, emergency response protocols, dedicated EV/CNG number plates, structured data sharing and sustained public awareness campaigns,” FRSC said in a statement.

The Corps Marshal further disclosed that FRSC is supporting the pilot deployment of Electric Vehicles in Abuja while working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that all converted and factory-built CNG vehicles comply with established safety standards.

He maintained that periodic inspections, certification of conversion centres, specialised training for emergency responders and continuous stakeholder engagement remain critical to achieving a safe and successful clean mobility transition.

While highlighting the environmental benefits of EVs and CNG vehicles, Shehu Mohammed called on vehicle owners, transport operators and conversion centres to adhere strictly to approved safety standards, stressing that public safety remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s clean mobility journey.
