Samsung SDI, BMW And Solid Power Join Forces

BMW, Samsung SDI, and Solid Power have joined forces to enhance solid electrolyte battery technology for electric vehicles. BMW and Solid Power have been working together since 2022, and now Samsung SDI will contribute to the mass production of cells and materials engineering.

Samsung SDI will produce cells using Solid Power’s solid sulfide-based electrolyte, while BMW will focus on battery pack and module design.

Together, the companies want to advance safer, more efficient batteries that could eventually support wider use in electric vehicles and help improve overall energy efficiency. Together, the companies have developed a functional system for the production of ASSB cells, marking a key step towards large-scale production. Solid Power’s sulfide-based electrolyte is engineered for high conductivity and stability, and the company claims that joining forces with BMW and Samsung SDI will help bring solid-state batteries closer to widespread use.

In May, BMW achieved a key milestone by conducting road tests of Solid Power’s solid electrolyte batteries in a modified i7 sedan. The successful tests represent an important step towards incorporating the technology into future electric models. The automaker is now aiming to introduce an all-solid battery in production vehicles by 2030. Solid electrolyte batteries are considered a breakthrough, with the potential to double driving range, reduce charging time, and reduce overall costs.
